An Afternoon In the Pijp

Seven independent shops in the Oude Pijp, from vintage and Japanese knives to a beer by the park and a design store, in one easy afternoon walk.

By sklepp ·

The Pijp is easy to shop on foot. In one afternoon you can pass vintage clothing, an old knife shop, a bottle shop at the park, a children's bookshop and a design store, all within the Oude Pijp.

This route has seven stops. Start at the top, take a break in the Sarphatipark halfway, and finish with a last vintage find.

1. Penny Lane Vintage

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

Start on the Eerste van der Helststraat at Penny Lane Vintage. Classic cuts and good-quality pieces in the spirit of Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Paul Newman, for seasoned vintage shoppers and first-timers alike.

2. Second Life Amsterdam

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

A short walk away, Second Life Amsterdam sells restored shoes, bags and accessories that are sourced and cleaned in southern Italy. Sustainability is the whole idea here, and the designer pieces are fairly priced.

3. Firma Moes messenwinkel & slijperij

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

Back on the Eerste van der Helststraat, Firma Moes has been selling knives and scissors for more than 80 years and is now run by the third generation. Japanese kitchen knives are a good reason to step in, and they sharpen too.

4. Bierbaum

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

Time for a break. Bierbaum sits on the edge of the Sarphatipark with more than 250 chilled bottles of beer and cider, plus four beers on tap to take away by the litre. Pick something up and take it to the park next door.

5. Casperle kinderboekenwinkel

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

Casperle is a children's and young adult bookshop on the Sarphatipark, with creative toys and postcards you will not find everywhere. A good place to find a present for a birthday coming up.

6. Mud in May

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

Mud in May is a design shop just off the Albert Cuyp market, with furniture, lighting, homeware and gifts. Brands like HAY and Seletti sit next to lesser-known designers, at prices for every budget.

7. The Swap Shop

Oude Pijp, Amsterdam

End at The Swap Shop on the Van Woustraat: vintage and thoughtfully made clothing, homewares, incense, vintage furniture and stereo components. It is a shop for everyone, and easy to lose an hour in.
